Checking Your Own Blood Pressure – Pennsylvania Hospital OBGYN Patient Portal – Your Pregnancy Journey

Checking Your Own Blood Pressure

We encourage all of our patients to monitor their blood pressure at home, at least once a week, beginning in the second trimester. Learn the five simple steps to use an automated home blood pressure cuff.

Topic: Second Trimester

For a step-by-step guide to taking your blood pressure at home, check out this video!  Your blood pressure machine is likely similar.

However, the video shows a woman writing down her blood pressure in a log book. Instead of a written log, you will be texting us your blood pressure. You will receive a reminder text once a week. Reply back to the reminder with your blood pressure, which is two numbers separated by a slash or a space. You can text: 120/80 or 120 80.  Please, no photos of your machine – our system cannot interpret them.

My machine has a few numbers on it. Which numbers should I be texting you?

The first blood pressure number is labelled “Systolic” or “SYS” and is always bigger.  The second number is “Diastolic” or “DIA.” Some blood pressure cuffs also report your heart rate. Ignore any number labelled “pulse,” “PUL,” or “HR.”

What happens after I text in the blood pressure?

We will text you back and let you know if the blood pressure is normal. If it is high, we will text you what to do next. The first step is to repeat the blood pressure. We may also ask about any symptoms of high blood pressure you may be having.

What if it is not a convenient time to check my blood pressure?

It’s ok to send in a blood pressure reading as soon as you get a chance, whether that’s later that evening or even the next day. We’d like to hear from you whenever you are able to check!
