What Happens During Prenatal Care Visits?

Topic: First Trimester, Welcome

Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, prenatal visits may include:

  • Review of your medical history
  • A physical examination
  • Lab tests (blood and urine)
  • Measuring your abdomen to monitor your baby’s growth
  • Check your baby’s heartbeat
  • Pelvic exam
  • Check your blood pressure and weight
  • An ultrasound is usually only done at the first appointment.  However, if you have already had an ultrasound this pregnancy, you may not have an additional one at your first prenatal visit.

Additional tests may be required, depending on your needs.  Your provider will decide how often they want to see you throughout your pregnancy.

Going to this first prenatal visit is a great first step in getting the pregnancy care that you need.   Other important aspects of prenatal care include:

  • Following a healthy diet
  • Taking your prenatal vitamins every day
  • Exercising
  • Staying hydrated
  • Getting plenty of rest
