Breastfeeding: Benefits for Both You and Baby

Have you thought about how you plan to feed your baby? Breastmilk is the ideal food for babies during their first 6 months of life and has many benefits for you and baby!

Topic: First Trimester

Breastmilk is tailored to each baby, providing the right balance of nutrients. It also has immune factors, called antibodies, which protect from infection. Infant formula is safe, but can never exactly match human breastmilk.  All major medical organizations, such as the World Health Organization, American Academy of Pediatrics, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend breastmilk as the ideal food for the baby’s first 6 months of life.  Breastfeeding is encouraged along with solid food until at least your baby’s first birthday, and longer if desired.

Babies who are breastfed are less likely to develop diabetes, allergies, asthma, childhood cancers, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). There are benefits to people who breastfeed as well. Breastfeeding individuals lose less blood after delivery. They lose pregnancy weight faster and have lower risks of breast and ovarian cancer later in life. Many people love the special bond they develop while nursing their baby.
