Topic: Third Trimester

What is a doula?

A doula is a person who supports other people during life events, commonly during labor and birth. They are trained to give continuous one-on-one care, physical support, and emotional support to you.

Why might you want to have a doula at your birth?

According to the March of Dimes, studies suggest there are many benefits to having continuous support during labor and birth. These benefits may include*:

  • Increased rate of vaginal birth (lower C-section rates)
  • Decrease in use of medications for pain relief
  • Shorter labor
  • Better satisfaction with birthing experience

Resources to help you find a doula:

There are also many private doulas in the Philadelphia area. One resource to search is DONA International, which certifies doulas.
